Call for Volunteers to Serve on USSYAA Committees

May 8, 2008

Rationale

During its April 29, 2008 conference call, the USSYAA Board approved an expansion of USSYAA's ad hoc committees as a means to engage better the talents and interests of USSYAA's members. The various committees will communicate with the Board through a designated liaison member of the Board. As circumstances warrant, committee chairs may be asked to participate in a Board conference call in order to briefly report on their committee's activities. The committees and their vacancies are summarized below and followed by a description of each committee.

Interested persons should email USSYAA President Norman Fortenberry with indication of the committee in which they have interest and the position for which they are applying (i.e., member or chair).

Detailed Descriptions of Ad Hoc Committees

Resource Development Committee

Purpose: This committee shall identify individual, foundation, and corporate targets for direct appeals/proposals as well as recommend solicitation strategies appropriate to the targets identified.

Chair: This committee would be appointed by and report to the President. The chair should be a person with professional experience in fundraising.

Membership: The membership of this committee should include individuals with experience in fundraising or reasonable connections to philanthropic organizations or individuals.

Annual Business Meeting Committee

Purpose: This committee shall consider whether a location other than Capitol Hill might be desirable for the annual business meeting. Should it determine that an alternative location would be desirable, it shall identify candidate venues for the annual business meeting, select and secure a menu of refreshments, consider whether to identify a "host" hotel for alumni weekend, etc.

Chair: This committee shall be appointed by and report to the President.

Membership: The membership of this committee would include any interested members.

Intermediate Range Planning Committee

Purpose: This committee shall look at events and opportunities at most 4 years into the future and develop strategies for their leverage/execution for consideration by the Board.

Chair: This committee shall be appointed by and report to the President-Elect.

Membership: This committee shall include any interested members.

Long Range Planning Committee

Purpose: This committee shall look at events and opportunities at least 4 years into the future and develop strategies for their leverage/execution for consideration by the Board.

Chair: This committee would be appointed by and report to the Vice-President.

Membership: This committee shall include any interested members. It would be helpful to have members with training/professional experience looking at long-term strategy.

Alumni Dinner Committee

Purpose: This committee shall plan and execute Alumni Dinner. It may be productive to consult with the Resource Development Committee in determining invitation targets and strategy. This committee shall also identify candidates for keynote speaker for the Board's consideration.

Chair: This committee shall operate as a subcommittee of the Alumni Programs Committee. Under the current bylaws this committee is chaired by the Vice President.

Membership: This committee shall include any interested members.

Mentoring Tables Committee

Purpose: This committee shall plan and execute Mentoring Tables at the opening of the USSYP program.

Chair: This committee shall continue to operate as a subcommittee of the Program Support Committee, chaired by the Liaison Officer. Multiple chairs are chosen by career field.

Membership: This committee shall include any interested members.

External Relations Committee

Purpose: This committee shall implement interactions (within guidelines set by Board initiative) with external organizations with which USSYAA has or wish to have a relationship (e.g., Partnership for Public Service and/or US Public Service Academy).

Chair: This committee shall report to the Liaison officer. The chair might be a more senior member or the Liaison Officer.

Membership: This committee shall include any interested members.

Alumni Profiles Committee

Purpose: This committee shall identify candidates (or solicit nominations) of alumni to interview. The Board has developed a template for questions to ease the actual interview process. These interviews might not only be posted to our Web site and used in newsletters, they might also be used in future promotional brochures, etc.

Chair: This committee shall operate as a subcommittee of the Communications Committee. This committee could usefully be chaired by one of our newer alumni.

Membership: The membership of this committee shall be open to any interested members.

Archives Committee

Purpose: This committee shall carefully review and catalog the archives of USSYAA with special attention to the archives of Mom Hearst. The committee would also seek to identify materials that could be used a) for USSYAA publicity efforts, b) to document the history of Mom Hearst's contacts with USSYP delegates, and c) to distill actual or composite personal narratives that allow others to truly appreciate the impact of Mom Hearst's efforts on behalf of USSYP delegates.

Chair: This committee would operate as a subcommittee of the Communications Committee. This committee could usefully be chaired by a trained historian, archivist, social scientists, etc. However, it may be necessary to go with anyone trained in formal research methods and possibly procure a trained historical researcher/social scientist as a consultant.

Membership: This committee shall include any interested members.

Salute to Public Service Luncheon Committee

Purpose: This committee plan and execute Salute to Public Service Luncheon. It may be productive to consult with the Resource Development Committee in determining invitation targets and strategy. This committee shall also identify candidates for speakers for the Board's consideration.

Chair: This committee shall operate as a subcommittee of the Alumni Programs Committee. This committee could usefully be chaired by (or at least consult with) a member who has current or former experience as a Capitol Hill staffer.

Membership: This committee shall include any interested members. The Vice President shall be a member of this committee.

Alumni Service Award Committee

Purpose: This committee shall recognize outstanding service to USSYAA.

Chair: This committee shall operate as a subcommittee of the Alumni Programs Committee.

Membership: This committee shall include any interested members.
